New York CNN —Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, will close all 51 of its health care clinics in six states and end virtual health care services, the company said Tuesday. Walmart had made a big push into health care in recent years, opening clinics next to its superstores that offered primary and urgent care, labs, X-rays, behavioral health and dental work in six states — Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and Texas. Walmart had targeted rural and underserved areas that have a shortage of primary care facilities. The announcement is an abrupt reversal in Walmart’s strategy and may leave a gap in health care access, particularly for lower-income patients without insurance who relied on the clinics. Walmart also said it will end virtual health care services.

“The proposed acquisition is by far the largest supermarket merger in U.S. history,” one that would unite “the No. 2 traditional supermarket chains in the United States,” it says in its complaint. is correct on the numbers, but the key word is “traditional.” Traditional supermarket chains no longer dominate the grocery business. Kroger is a distant second to Walmart, with a 10 percent market share, and Albertsons is fourth (behind Costco Wholesale), with 6 percent. So even if Kroger and Albertsons merged, they would be only a little more than half of Walmart’s size.

New York CNN —Eye ointments sold at CVS and Walmart may not actually be sterile, a recall posted by the US Food and Drug Administration warned. On Feb. 26, the FDA posted a voluntary recall from Brassica Pharma, which is recalling several eye ointments with expiration dates ranging from February 2024 to September 2025. This recall is the latest in the FDA’s increased focus on eye products. The agency warned that potential contamination can be a serious health risk because medication applied directly to the eye can “bypass some of the body’s natural defenses.”Brassica’s recall includes brands of eye ointments at popular retailers: Equate Lubricant Eye Ointment (Walmart’s private label), Equate Stye Lubricant Eye Ointment, CVS Health Lubricant Eye Ointment and the Lubricant PM Ointment, which is distributed by AACE Pharmaceuticals. The recall warned customers to stop using the eye ointment and said they can return it.

Why Walmart is buying Vizio
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Walmart announced Tuesday that it’s buying TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion to shore up its advertising business and create a more potent rival to Amazon’s booming ad business. The deal would give Walmart more ways to offer ads through Vizio televisions, as well as create entertainment options exclusively for customers with Vizio TVs. “We also believe it enables a profitable advertising business that is rapidly scaling,” Walmart US chief revenue officer Seth Dallaire said in a news release Tuesday. Walmart wants to move into the lucrative advertising space to supplement its low-margin retail business. Its advertising business reached $3.4 billion last year, but makes up less than 1% of its total sales.

Walmart is reportedly in talks to buy TV manufacturer Vizio for over $2 billion , in an effort to bolster its ad business, according to The Wall Street Journal. Here are three ways Vizio would power-up Walmart's ad business and make it a much bigger competitor to Amazon, according to several ad industry experts. While Walmart buying Vizio would grow its ads business, it would also improve the margins for its current ad business, said Nikhil Raj, chief business officer of adtech company Moloco’s retail media business. The new inventory Walmart would inherit would let it tap TV and branding budgetsIf Walmart buys Vizio, it would inherit connected-TV ad inventory, which it doesn’t currently have. Most of Walmart’s retail media business comes from search ads , though it’s expanded that to include some display and video ads.

Walmart said it hasn't made any changes to store managers' pay structure in more than a decade. U.S. managers of the sprawling supercenters, which run about 180,000 square feet, will receive $20,000 in stock grants. Walmart said the stock grants will vest over a three-year period, with ownership for one-twelfth of the grant total coming every quarter. The new starting annual base salary for U.S. store managers will range from $90,000 to $170,000. That means that the average base pay for store leaders will go to $128,000 from $117,000, according to Cedric Clark, executive vice president of store operations at Walmart’s U.S. division.

Wednesday’s filing alleges that Match Group cut its advertising spending on Meta’s platforms over its concerns. Wednesday’s complaint cites an alleged email exchange between Match and Meta late last year in which the dating company asked how Meta prevented its ads from running next to inappropriate content. Meta responded saying it had removed some of the flagged content, including the group, the complaint states. Former Facebook employee-turned-whistleblower Arturo Bejar also told a Senate subcommittee in November that Meta’s top executives, including Zuckerberg, ignored warnings for years about harm to teens on its platforms. New York CNN —Walmart is joining the AI, drone and tech race. The superstore announced that it is offering drone delivery for up to 75% of the Dallas area’s population, or about 1.8 million homes. But drone delivery as a concept isn’t new, and Walmart’s timeline to take off in Dallas is remarkably short. Normally, customers who need to shop for a Super Bowl party search for items on the Walmart app individually, the company said. Social media’s antisemitism problemThe rise in antisemitism since the outbreak of war in the Middle East has ignited a clash between Wall Street donors and universities, and divided some workplaces. Now, the pressure is building on social media platforms, particularly Elon Musk’s X and TikTok, with advertisers, celebrities and influencers pulling spending and confronting executives about the proliferation of hate speech. He posted to X his support for white nationalist conspiracy theories that Jewish communities were spreading hatred.
